Fishing Foundations: Lessons That Go Beyond the Water

At The Overflow, we believe some of the most meaningful lessons in a young man’s life happen outside of a classroom. Sometimes they happen in a garden, around a workbench, or standing quietly beside the water with a fishing rod in hand.

Last week, a group of middle school boys and mentors gathered for our Fishing Foundations workshop at Bass Pro Shops. The afternoon was designed as a hands-on learning experience where the boys could dive into the fundamentals of fishing—while also discovering the deeper character lessons the sport teaches.

Together we explored fish species common to our region, how different rods and reels function, and why anglers choose certain lures depending on habitat and feeding patterns. The boys handled equipment, asked thoughtful questions, and began learning how experienced anglers think about the water before ever casting a line.

But the purpose of the workshop reaches far beyond catching fish.

Fishing naturally teaches patience.

It requires focus.

It demands self-control.

A fisherman must slow down, pay attention, and learn to wait—qualities that shape strong character in young men.

One of the highlights of the day was the opportunity for the boys to learn from professional angler Brent Davenport, who generously invested his time and expertise in the group. Brent shared insights from his years of experience on the water and encouraged the boys to approach fishing with curiosity, discipline, and respect for the outdoors. We are incredibly grateful for his willingness to pour into the next generation.

In just a few weeks, the boys will take what they learned and put it into practice as we head out on the water together. For many of them, it will be the first time applying these new skills in a real fishing environment.

Programs like Fishing Foundations are a reminder that mentorship often happens in simple moments—standing side by side, learning a skill, and sharing wisdom that lasts long after the day ends.

At The Overflow, we are thankful for mentors, partners, and community members like Brent who help make these experiences possible. Each opportunity is another step toward helping young men grow in confidence, character, and purpose.
