One of the greatest gifts a growing nonprofit can receive is a fresh set of eyes.
Recently we had the privilege of partnering with an incredible group of students from the North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics, and the experience exceeded every expectation.
Their assignment was simple: learn about The Overflow, identify the challenges we face as a young and growing nonprofit, and develop practical solutions. But what they delivered was far more than a classroom project.
The students interviewed our leadership team to better understand our mission, goals, and current obstacles. They then visited our property to experience our vision firsthand, walking the land, asking thoughtful questions, and gaining a deeper understanding of the work we're building.
Today, they presented their recommendations during a "Shark Tank" style presentation, and we were genuinely blown away.
Their work included:
A comprehensive branding guide.
Website mockups designed to better tell our story.
SEO recommendations to help more people discover our mission.
A communication and marketing strategy.
Volunteer and participant recruitment ideas.
Creative 3D-printed sign mockups for our garden, entrance, and property.
Practical, action-ready recommendations we can begin implementing immediately.
What impressed us most wasn't simply the quality of the work. It was the level of intentionality behind every recommendation. The students took time to understand who we are before suggesting where we could go. Their ideas reflected current best practices while remaining realistic for an organization at our stage of growth.
Experiences like this remind us that innovation often comes from collaboration. When people with different perspectives come together around a shared mission, incredible things can happen.
We are deeply grateful to these talented students for investing their creativity, time, and energy into The Overflow. Their work has given us practical tools and renewed excitement as we continue building an organization that serves young people in our community.
A special thank you to Dr. Tonya Little and educator Brandon Brooks for creating opportunities like this and for guiding these students throughout the project. Your leadership made this partnership possible, and we are excited to begin putting many of these ideas into action.
The future of The Overflow is brighter because of the investment these students made this week, and we cannot wait to see where these ideas lead.
