Growing Food, Growing Purpose

On June 19 at The Overflow, participants spent the afternoon learning about food insecurity and poverty in Burke County, the history and significance of Juneteenth, and how small acts of service can make a meaningful difference in the lives of others.

The boys learned that many families in our community struggle to access healthy food—and that real leadership begins with understanding the challenges others face. They also discussed how freedom comes with responsibility: the responsibility to serve, uplift, and care for our neighbors.

After the discussion, they put those lessons into action by building grow boxes that will be donated to local families. These boxes will create opportunities for families to grow fresh vegetables, learn new skills, and increase access to healthy food right at home.

We ended the day with a cookout, laughter, and time together as a community.

At The Overflow, we believe character is built through action. Today, these young men did not just learn about service—they practiced it.
