Casting Lessons Beyond the Water

This past Saturday morning, a group of young men from The Overflow gathered early for a fishing workshop that was about much more than catching fish. Before the lines were cast, everyone shared breakfast together—an opportunity to slow down, laugh, and begin the morning in community.
Once the rods were in hand, the real learning began. Throughout the morning, the boys practiced casting techniques, learned how to properly set a hook, and began to understand the patience that fishing requires. Fishing has a way of slowing everything down. You can’t rush it. You have to watch, wait, and stay focused—lessons that carry far beyond the water.
The workshop also emphasized stewardship of the environment. Mentors talked with the boys about respecting the land and water, cleaning up after ourselves, and caring for the natural spaces that provide these experiences. Learning to fish also means learning to be responsible stewards of creation.
Most importantly, the day was shaped by the men who showed up. We are deeply grateful for the mentors who volunteered their time to teach, encourage, and walk alongside these young men. Their presence matters. Skills like fishing can be taught in a few minutes, but character, patience, and confidence grow through consistent mentorship.
At The Overflow, experiences like this are part of a bigger vision—helping young men develop practical skills while also learning deeper life lessons.
Thank you for supporting The Overflow to ensure our programs are offered at no cost to the boys and families we serve.
